Children of the Everglades
Children of the Everglades, featuring large-format photographs of Seminole-Miccosukee Indian children, is on display through June 2010 in the terminal building at Southwest Florida International Airport. The exhibit also features display cases of tribal artifacts and crafts, including baskets, toys and patchwork jackets. Most images were taken by W. Stanley Hanson in the 1920s and 1930s and are from the Hanson Family Archives and the W. Stanley Hanson and Robert Mitchell Collection of Seminole Indian Photographs archived at the National Anthropological Archives of the Smithsonian Institute.
Children of the Everglades is part of the Lee County Alliance for the Arts’ Art in Flight program. A partnership between the Lee County Alliance for the Arts and the Lee County Port Authority, Art in Flight brings art to public spaces at Southwest Florida International Airport. Additional sponsors for the Children of the Everglades exhibit include the Smithsonian Institution, Family Thrift Center, Carter-Pritchett Advertising, Scott Carter Signs, Owen Studio and MMT Printers.
